Phonics Readiness / module 1 of 3
The Sound of My Name
The child discovers that words are made of sounds, starting with the most loved word they know: their own name.
Guide
Say your child's name slowly, stretching the first sound: 'Mmmm-usa'. Ask: 'What sound does your name start with?' Hunt around the house together for three things that start with the same sound. Celebrate each find loudly. Repeat daily with a different family member's name.
Material
- No printed material needed
- Optional: family photos to point at while playing
Activities
Indoor: sound hunt around the house. Outdoor: on a walk, spot things that start with the child's sound. Group: in a pod meetup, children introduce themselves with their sound: 'I am Musa and I brought a mango.'
