Curriculum / Phonics Readiness / module 2
The Syllable Clap
Children clap the beats inside words, discovering that words break into parts long before they meet letters.
Parent guide (what to say and do)
Start with names: clap 'Fa-ti-ma' together, three claps. Then clap foods at dinner: 'ro-ti', 'bir-ya-ni'. Make it a game, never a drill: 'Find me a one-clap food! A three-clap animal!' If the child claps wrong, just clap it correctly yourself with a smile and move on; correction kills the play.
Learning material
- Clap game word lists in English and Urdu (platform library)
Practical exercises and activities
Mealtime: clap everything on the table. Walk game: clap street things: 'rik-shaw', 'mo-tor-cy-cle'. Group: in pod circle, each child claps their own name and the group echoes it.
Materials required
Nothing at all.
Assessment checkpoints
Child claps two and three beat words correctly four times out of five during play.
