The Kitchen Garden / module 3 of 3
The Bean Pot: A Full Plant Life Cycle
From one dry bean to a plant bearing new beans: the complete life cycle over roughly two months, with the child as sole caretaker.
Guide
Sprout the bean first in wet cotton so the child sees the root emerge, then transfer to a pot. Full ownership again: watering schedule, sunlight position, a weekly measurement. When flowers appear, celebrate; when pods form, open one together and find next year's seeds inside. Close the loop explicitly: 'This seed came from a plant, and it can make a whole new plant. Who else in nature works like this?'
Material
- Life cycle wheel to colour in as each stage arrives (platform library)
Activities
Week 1: cotton sprouting jar on the windowsill with daily drawings. Ongoing: weekly height chart connected to measuring skills from mathematics. Finale: harvest seeds, save them in a labelled envelope, and gift half to another pod family.
You will need
Dry beans from the kitchen, cotton, a jar, one pot with soil.
Check yourself
Child narrates the full cycle from seed to new seed using their own drawings and hands the saved seed envelope to another family with instructions.
